Happy New Year!

The year 2010 was a difficult year for many people and for everyone suffering and struggling our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to you.  The world has eaten up many good people with it's ferocious appetite.  But one thing nobody can ignore, we are all stronger as a person.  The challenges of 2010 have brought change that many didn't want to see yet experienced.  That change made all of us into new people.  As we leave 2010 we do indeed say 'Good-Bye' with pleasure and hello to 2011!

2011 will be the land of new opportunities for all that have learned and experienced.  We have changed our minds, hearts and capabilities to account for the new 'frontier'.  OK, maybe not that grand but a new beginning nonetheless.  No matter what age we are or what we do day to day, let us open our eyes to a new 2011.  Let's all put down the walls built through time that have hardened us and move forward into 2011 with new minds and thoughts open to all possibilities. 

For those that get up and go to school each day, may your minds be sponges capable of absorbing all information to change the world.

For those that get up and go to school each day, may you hearts put aside conflict and distractions to make you results powerful and organization successful.

For those that get up and have done both school and work, may your hearts and minds take pride in accomplishments and work well done and accept yourself for who you are - a great person with many jobs well done. 

Regardless, let us look forward to 2011 and make it a great year!

Contracts for Care?!

I often hear from perspective customers the question about whether or not a contract is required for care or not. I am often very surprised by this questions since those of us in the profession for the right reasons know the answer is 'no' but wonder how it can ever be. 

Sure, I understand the business principle of contracts and guarentee that are offered for security and peace of mind.  But in home care?  How can home care be scheduled if the service we offer is so dependant on person's condition and capability?  How doessomeone with beginning stages of dementia know that they will only need 20 hours of care for a period of time?  How can someone recovering from an injury know that it will take them a period of time to heal?  What happens if somebody's condition changes and they get better or don't get worse?  With a contract you are stuck. 

Be certain that if you are considering home care you understand if the agency requires a contract or not.  Those agencies that understand client care don't have contracts. 

Giving Time to Make the Right Choice

So often in this business we are encountered with families that are in a rush to set up service.  This is due to many reasons and a lot of justified ones, like a rapidly deteriorating condition, or other family member illnesses.  However, for those individuals or families that do have the time, take it.  Take the time to consider all of your options and determine which ones are the right ones for you. 

During the moments when you have the time, consider the answers you heard from all the sales reps in the field.  Consider whether or not you believe that they are over-committing or setting unrealistic expectations.  From our experience here, this occurs and is pretty much a nature of the beast in any sales role.  But the reality is there are things you should know when making this decision.

Home care is a service related business and no matter how sophisticated the computer systems are, personalities do clash.  Did the sale representative inform you that replacement caregivers can be found if this occurs? 

Home care caregivers also get ill, or have ill families that need attention from time to time.  It's hard enough to work for clients that are sick and day to day remain healthy.  At times caregivers also get sick and need to heal, or care for a loved one.  When this occurs, did the sales representative inform you a replacement caregiver can be schedule? 

These are just a couple of examples of items that should be considered when researching home care. 

Patience for Patients

Many times I am often asked about how fast services can start.  The reason why that is the case is because the patient or their family waited too long prior to inquiring and at the moment we are talking with them nerves have worn out.  Now, for these families patience is not a solution or even a recommendation because they've waited too long. 

However, for the other families that thinking about getting some assistance for their loved one, keep patience.  Why?  With today's economy and market conditions for even the health care industry you may feel like you've just visited a used car lot after the first assessment.  Rather, with patience things will become clear and you will see that there are agencies that practice the philosophy that in time the right answer will come from the right question.  It's just not, however, on our time line.  Those questions come from the client or their family after they have given considerable thought on whether or not to bring in assistance.  And, if you are working with an agency that also believes in same spirit than all will work itself out in the end.
